History:
Project ‘Guardian’, was the United States answer for the mutant threat that had swept across the American continent. It started in 1971, when the remnants of the military began the process of finding the perfect genes to start with. Make no mistake, the military at this point had no love for mutants, but it became clear after the fall of Washington D.C. that conventional weapons would not work against mutants with unmatched powers. And if this weapon should fall they could make another, the products of Project ‘Guardian’ were ultimately expendable.

It had taken many years, but in 1975, they had finally created a successful mutant, through genetic manipulation. Only known as ‘Guardian’, he was genetically engineered in an underground bunker in Northern Montana, near the border of the Badlands. As Guardian matured inside his tank, the scientists performed constant manipulation on the x-factor gene in the hope of squeezing as much potential out of his mutation as possible.

Unfortunately, things were not looking good. The artificial growth serum failed to mature Guardian quickly, and the project was taking to long to produce results. The situation on the surface was growing worse by the day causing attention to the project to dip greatly, and much security was sacrificed for the more practical ‘Project Nimrod’, mechanical giants called Sentinels, technological wonders that could be mass-produced.

In 1986, the neglected bunker was attacked by a group of mutants who learned of its existence, and Guardian was taken from his maturation tank. Guardian woke up two days later, finding himself in a small Kansas town called Olean. This was the first time Guardian had any real interaction with the real world, having spent all of his years in a Virtual Reality world, learning and being conditioned for his mission. Olean was a small community where both humans, and mutants learned to live together, it wasn’t perfect but it was a small price to pay for survival.

Taken in by a couple called the Prescott’s, Guardian was given a formal name, Jonathan, and raised as if he were their only child. The mutant raid on the Montana base not only brought the child back, but many small little gadgets including a pair of contacts with micro-circuitry that was years ahead of its time, and a pair of golden gauntlets that were way to big for the child to wear. Jonathan’s adoptive parents kept the equipment in a chest in the attic for the day he could use them.

It would be many years later, and Jonathan would find himself surrounded by a group of mutant hating children, and mutants who learned what he really was: a mutant killing mutant. Both sides attacked Jon Prescott, who even as a teenager exhibited strong powers with incredible strength, energy bursts, flight and a tough skin. But the numbers were too much for Jon, who grew frustrated as the children continued to swarm over him, and he used a power he never knew he had, and everything around him exploded vaporizing the attacking children, the schoolyard, the school and the surrounding buildings.

Frightened, Jon rushed back to his house, grabbed the chest his parents stored the stuff in, and fled Olean as a wave of radiation washed over the city.

Jon would travel solo for many years, before getting together with a group of ragtag mutants, and he would meet his first friend Marcus DelSoro. Catching news that the Madri were going to sweep along the east coast, Jon and others met them in Charleston, North Carolina with the intent to stop them for good. But, they would lose as the Four Horsemen eventually stepped in to defeat the small group.

The mutants around Guardian were falling quickly now, and seeing no other alternative he fled the city, and crossed the Atlantic to Russia where he would go underground and help the scattered human and mutant settlements in the country.
It would be a year later when Apocalypse would fall at the hands of Magneto, and the reign of terror would end. The world took a collective sigh, but then the world suffered with the outbreak of the Legacy Virus, which claimed many mutant lives before a cure was discovered a few years later. Many speculated that those mutants loyal to Apocalypse were responsible for its release, retribution for the death of their master.

Soon after Guardian would receive a coded message on his gauntlets computer, now big enough to wear them, asking him to come to Muir Island to form a new team under the former X-Man, Nightcrawler. Jon accepted, and immediately set off for the small island that was north of England.

During Jon’s years with X-Calibre he has attempted to grow more as a person and abandon his more emotionless persona, which he developed after the disaster at Olean. He forged few friendships, most notably with teammates Freezer Burn, and Stalker, but he would become a well-respected member of X-Calibre to everybody, even if they found him to be a pompous ass.

In X-Calibre Guardian would be responsible for the death of Blitzkriegs parents back in the past after a mission to stop a madman named Vein from causing a temporal incursion, which would change history in his favor. During a mission in space, Jon would become bonded to the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force, the protector of the M’Krann Crystal. The Phoenix would stay bonded with Jon for a few years having become fascinated with the dark feelings that filled Jon, and the conflict he was under to quell that anger.

The Phoenix viscously attacked X-Calibre, and it would take the whole might of the team to break through to Jon’s personality that was buried under the cosmic entity. It would lie dormant for months before rising again when Galactus’ attempt to give Jon the Power Cosmic would fail, after a grueling battle with Thor against the Silver Surfer, to stop the madman Vein once again. The Phoenix would comply to help X-Calibre, and then it would lie dormant once again until it found a more suitable host in the willing Rebecca Warren.

One of the few remaining mutants to stay after the ‘Nightmare Massacre’, Guardian continues to work with X-Calibre to be the worlds last best hope of moving forward.
